Ide Hill, Kent. An inspiring place where I am lucky enough to live!
For 4yrs I lived in London, just over two of those was with Luke above his mums pub. And for two years we dreamed of being able to move out of the city and into the country. I would browse my Zoopla app on a daily basis, there was a long list of requirements. Under an hours commute for Luke, close to where we kept the horse, as little neighbours as possible, beautiful garden, amazing views, not too far away from everything and of course the budget constraints of being anywhere near the M25.
Then last August a little cottage came up in Ide Hill just outside of Sevenoaks. I had recently passed my driving test and we had some money saved (in fact we had cancelled our wedding to fund the move away from the city) so too me it was the perfect time to start looking. For Luke who had only ever lived in Dulwich not being a 5 minute walk away from work and leaving the area he had spent his whole life was a big deal, for me who had spent most of her life moving from place to place it was nothing but exciting. So I roped Luke into going to see this cottage and we fell in love, it was a beautiful brick cottage that fitted all of our requirements and was the perfect size. We immediately rang the estate agents and told them we wanted it. As it goes with the property market anywhere close to the M25 you need to be quick, another family had already put themselves forward and we would have to wait a few days while the Landlord decided. We were headed off to Devon that weekend so we were nicely distracted but the weekend was filled with visiting pretty interior shops planning all the lovely things we would get when we got our new home. We had a phone on the second day of our trip. We didn't get the house.
I was gutted. We both were but me especially. Having grown up in the countryside London had run its course for me, I was finding it claustrophobic, stressful and I was desperate for my own home. We had been so close and I spiralled into a bit of a dark place for a while. We looked at a couple of other places but they were either too expensive or too far. Then about 4 weeks later I had a phone call, it was the estate agent asking if we were still interested in the cottage. It had to be fate of course we were bloody well still interested! And then proceeded 4 stressful weeks of credit checks, working like a lunatic, late night trips to ikea and all the other stresses that come with moving house! It was mental and our first night sleeping on the floor in the living room and then a crazy weekend of flat pack, cleaning and sorting almost proved too much with our busy jobs.
My goodness it was worth it. We have had 6 lovely months here in our little home. A few mishaps while working out how often the cesspit needs emptying or running out of oil for the boiler in the coldest two weeks of this winter but Luke now proudly owns a lawnmower, Cleo got her trampoline, we had Esther our beautiful Vizsla come into our lives and of course the rabbits Captain Snugglebutt and Chompy. This summer we are looking forward to BBQs, gardening and just enjoying our spare time outside. And the best bit is being able to go for walks in this beautiful scenery literally behind our house! I hope to have many happy years here yet.
